A Fit and Healthy New Year

Never has there been a more important time for us to take care of our health. We have all spent 2020 very aware of the fact that those who are not in the best of health are more vulnerable to Covid 19 as well as many other viruses and illnesses. Being unfit or overweight also makes us more at risk.

January is traditionally the time of year when after the excesses of the Christmas season, we take stock and embark on new regimes to get ourselves into better shape. We are all becoming aware of the importance of eating well and know that exercise will also help support our immune system. This will have a bearing on how well we can resist succumbing to the seasonal flu viruses and colds as well as any future risk from Covid 19.

2021 saw the closure of leisure centres and gyms across the country for periods of time, along with a ban on playing most sports. We were encouraged to go out once a day to exercise, but there was an increase in the number of people who gained weight during this difficult time. Walking became a popular pastime for many during the spring/summer lockdown, but this became more difficult during the second lockdown as the weather changed and we moved into winter.

Now is the right time for us all to find a new and healthy regime to take us into 2021. Establishing a routine is a good idea, as is finding something we enjoy and can stick to long term. Walking has been proven to be one of the best forms of exercise, It’s free and accessible for most of us.  We are so fortunate to live in such close proximity to the beautiful Ashdown Forest which gives us instant access to the most incredible footpaths and open spaces. You can walk in official guided walking groups, with a few friends, a single friend or alone but there is no excuse not to get out and get fit. Walking at a good pace is believed to be as good as jogging, without the stress on the joints and the need for special kit, but the simple act of walking, at any pace, is good for the body and just as importantly, the mind.

Following a healthy lifestyle, including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet, drinking lots of water and taking regular exercise will all contribute to building a healthy immune system. We can all make this part of our New Year’s Resolution this year, enabling us to stay fit and healthy into the future. Something we should all be aiming to do as we start 2021. Helping to ensure health, both in mind and body, and hopefully we can all enjoy a much better year than the last one.
