30 years of Forest Row Twinning Association
8 January 2022 • Forest Row Local
On 6th December 1990, ten
Forest Row residents put in £1
to fund the start of the Forest
Row Twinning Association. They were quickly joined by others and various organisations in the village, schools and commercial, to enable a suitable twinning partner to be found. During 1991 fundraising continued with an auction of promises and a boules competition on Forester’s Green while the search for a suitable twinning partner went ahead.
In November 1991 an initial visit was made to Milly-la Forêt, a town of comparable size to Forest Row located a similar distance
from Paris as Forest Row is
from London. A visit to Forest Row in January 1992 by the Milly-la-Forêt committee confirmed the compatibility.
On the 11th April 1992 a
signing ceremony was held
in Milly-la-Forêt followed
on 16th May 1992 by a
second signing ceremony
in Forest Row. 30 years of
close links between the two
have continued since with hundreds of residents of
both places taking part in exchange visits.
While activities between the two twinning associations have been restricted for
the last two years, both are looking forward to exchange visits in 2022 as 30 years
of the twinning link are celebrated.
Milly-la-Forêt are scheduled to visit in May and a return
visit is planned for October.
Group visits are usually made
by coach with accommodation provided by the hosting association members. Visits vary each time, sometimes including hectic activity and other times quietly spent with hosts exploring locally. The cost to Forest Row Twinning association members for a visit is based on the cost of the coach. For the first time in May 2022 the visit from Milly- la-Forêt will take place over three nights and this may be the format adopted for the future.
Between visits members are involved in fundraising (Fun day /
Summer Fête on the village green for example), recruitment events and social activities. There are regular newsletters with articles written by the members.
Forest Row Twinning Association membership is open to all residents of Forest Row and surrounding villages, there are even members resident in East Grinstead and further afield where they have
a connection to Forest Row. Membership costs just £10 a year per household (up to two adults and any number of children under 18 years).
Membership of the twinning association is great for individuals or their families that are learning French, but you don’t have to speak French to be a member, on visits we try to match the abilities of visitor and host. To get the most from twinning it is good to be able to host, but we recognise that that is not always possible. For those happy to host but not wishing to travel, there is also
a welcome. With links to art and horticulture as well as its historic centre, there are many other reasons to visit Milly-la- Forêt.
