Wealden
Supports a
Cleaner
Countryside
Wealden District Council is supporting the
Great British September Clean, taking place from Friday 11 to Sunday 27 September.
It’s a good reason for anyone who’s been stuck indoors over the spring and summer months to get out in the fresh air and socialise in a safe and managed environment. People wishing to take part can contact the Council by email at springclean@ wealden.gov.uk
Earlier this year Wealden provided over 30 groups with litter picking equipment in preparation for the Great British Spring Clean which was due to start in March. The event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, restrictions and guidelines will apply to the September event. Individuals can carry out voluntary litter-picking with members of the same household, as two households together, or with five other people from different households. A distance of at least two metres must be maintained at all times. Different groups can litter pick different parts of the same village or town. Anyone interested in joining the Great British September Clean should keep up to date with the Keep Britain Tidy website www.keepbritaintidy.org as this guidance is subject to change.
Councillor Roy Galley, Cabinet Member for Waste Management said:
“The Wealden community has always pulled together so brilliantly to support this initiative in the past.
This year will be no different despite the change in circumstances. We’re grateful to all those who have signed up so far, and hope that more will do so in the lead up to September. As well as helping to improve
the environment in which we live, it’s a great excuse to get out into the fresh air and exercise.”
The Council’s waste contractor Biffa will again be helping to support local groups by providing litter picking equipment and arranging disposal of the litter collected. Priority for new equipment will be given to any new groups volunteering and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Waste sacks and waste collection services are available to all groups.
