News from East Grinstead Foodbank

The East Grinstead Foodbank, although based in the Jubilee Centre in East Grinstead, supports not just the town but local villages including Forest Row, Hartfield & Colemans Hatch.

We are very grateful to the support provided and by donations at 3 locations in Forest Row; the Community Centre, Baptist Church and Tesco Express and also by the Cyrnel Bakery. The Community Centre and the Ashdown Forest Health Centre can refer clients in need to us.

We were also delighted to be at a recent monthly market to outline how we work & what we do.

Our volunteers at the foodbank continue to be busy helping clients with food & household items, generously donated from the local community. In the year to 31st March 2019, The Trussell Trust (a group of 427 foodbanks nationally) reported a 19% increase in food parcels handed out to 1.6 million.

Whilst we, at the local foodbank, haven’t seen that level of growth over the last year – comparing the full year of 2015 v 2018 – we have seen an 80% increase in demand! And in March and April 2019, we helped on average 35 adults and children per week.

In July 2019 we are packing close to 130 bags for the summer period and delivering them to local schools before term ends, this is an increase from 85 last year. The summer holidays tend to be quieter for us, but our need is highest in the Autumn & Winter months.

Where appropriate, when clients visit we also try to signpost them to other agencies and groups who may be able to help, such as local Housing Needs teams, Mother and baby charities such as Stripey Stork at Reigate, the Hub and the Hope Job Club.

As one of our volunteers said; ‘We can’t solve every problem or right every injustice, but we can lend a helping hand in a crisis’.

We remain most grateful for your local support, with thanks

Tony Cox & the Foodbank Steering Team.
